In a first for South Africa, Steenberg Farm in Cape Town’s Constantia Valley is harnessing the power of augmented reality to immerse guests in the wonder of the wine harvesting season.
The annual harvesting of varietals like Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and the Cape’s finest reds is off-limits to the public, but now, thanks to the estate’s new Immersive Harvest Experience, guests will be able to witness the magic of the yield without ever having to disturb the centuries-old process.
Harvest enthusiasts will use their smartphones to scan QR codes, which will unlock as they walk along a trail winding through Steenberg’s vineyard blocks. Once scanned, using augmented reality, videos and images will feature Steenberg winemaker Elunda Basson or farm manager and viticulturist Vlok Hanekom, offering fascinating information about the harvest.
As they walk along the trail, they will also be able to view footage of pickers at work or a tractor pulling bins up the road through their camera lens.
Phone-based AR is becoming extremely popular in tourism to enhance real-world experiences with digital content. Since almost everyone has a smartphone, it follows that access to AR offerings has become open to all.

“We are the first wine farm in South Africa to allow you to witness the harvest through augmented reality,” says Steenberg Farm Marketing Manager Jestine Enslin.
“This exciting offering is available to anyone – tech lovers, wine enthusiasts, or simply people who are interested in experiencing something that has never been done before and are interested in our brand. Everyone is welcome, no matter what your age. Comfortable walking shoes and your phone are all you need.”
Technologies like AI and AR are redefining travel experiences globally, from tailoring personalised tours to optimising booking processes. Steenberg is embracing the change through offerings like the Immersive Harvest Experience. It even explores the benefits of wellness solutions like therapeutic VR meditation.
Steenberg’s Immersive Harvest Experience is priced from R9 190 per couple.
The package includes a one-night stay for two at the Steenberg Hotel & Spa, the Immersive Harvest Experience, a bottle of Steenberg signature wine on arrival, a wine-tasting experience, lunch or dinner for two (including a 12% service fee), and complimentary use of mountain bikes to explore the magnificent 300-hectare estate.
